Getting paid as a dog walker: invoices, pricing and late owners

For walkers with their own clients, paid in Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, Zelle or cash.

The short answer

SnapPaid makes one bill per walk. Pick when you send them and say it before the first walk: after each walk, or the week's bills together on Friday, one per walk. Send it by text so the owner can pay from her phone at work. SnapPaid takes 0% and costs $9.99 a month after 3 free invoices, but the owner's payment app may charge you a fee. Rover keeps 20% of each US booking, and Rover clients have to stay on Rover. A photo shows the dog at one moment; it does not prove a full 30 minute walk.

Getting paid

When should dog walking clients pay, before or after the walk?

Either works, as long as it is written down before the first walk. Paying after each walk or at the end of each week is simple for regulars. For a new client, a one-off walk or a holiday week, asking for payment up front is fair.

Should I bill dog walking clients per walk, weekly or monthly?

In SnapPaid each walk is its own bill, so the real choice is when you send them. Send each walk's bill as you finish, or send the week's bills together on Friday, one per walk. One Wisconsin pet pro on Alignable put it this way: "Each Friday, I charge my clients for the services from Saturday prior." Waiting a month lets weeks of walks build up before you see any money. A bill that covers a whole week or month is not in SnapPaid yet.

How do I get paid when the owner is at work during every walk?

Send the bill by text, so she can pay from her phone wherever she is. The link opens a page in her phone's browser with buttons for Venmo, Cash App and PayPal, and your Zelle details to copy.

What this looks like
An owner pays for a month of daily walks weeks after the month ends.
What to do

Switch her to paying each week. Tell her the date it starts, then send that week's walk bills each Friday, one per walk.

What SnapPaid does

SnapPaid makes one bill per walk, and her client page shows which are still open. On day 3, 7 and 14 it asks you "Did Jen pay?", and one tap sends her a nudge.

What it does not do

It does not make one bill for a week or a month of walks. It does not send reminders to clients on its own or repeat bills on a schedule. You send each walk's bill.

Can I set up automatic weekly billing for regular walks?

Not in SnapPaid. It has no recurring invoices and no automatic charging. Automatic charging needs software that keeps the client's card on file, such as Time To Pet, which charges 3% + $0.30 per card payment. SnapPaid is our app, so weigh this with that in mind.

How do I keep track of which clients have paid?

Keep one list per client, with every bill and whether it is paid, no matter which app the money came through.

What this looks like

Clients pay in Venmo, Cash App, Zelle and cash, and you lose track.

SnapPaid gives each client a page with every job and what is still open. Mark a bill as paid for any method, cash included. When a client taps "I've paid," you get an alert.

Pricing

How much should you get paid to walk a dog in the US?

The best dated figure we found: Pet Sitters International's 2024 survey put the average US dog walk at $25.63 for 31 minutes. That is an average for PSI member businesses, who are mostly established pros, not for all walkers or app walkers. We found no other credible, dated rate survey. Compare it with what walkers near you charge on their own sites.

Should I charge for a 30 minute walk or by the hour?

Price the walk, not the hour. PSI reports dog walks as a price per visit of about 30 minutes, and a set price is easy for owners to compare. Offer a longer walk as its own price. SnapPaid takes either a flat price or an hourly rate per job.

How much extra should I charge for a second dog from the same house?

We found no reliable figure for a second-dog charge, so set your own and state it up front. A simple method: a fixed add-on per extra dog, written in your price list before the first walk. Put "2 dogs" in the note on the bill so every bill explains the price.

What this looks like

The client has two dogs and expects the one-dog price.

Say the two-dog price when you book, not when you bill. If she already pays the one-dog price, give a start date for the new price, as with any rate change.

What does it mean when a dog walking service pays walkers per dog, not per hour?

You earn a set amount for each dog you walk, however long the route takes. Walking two dogs together pays more than one, but a slow walk or a long drive does not. Before you accept, work out your pay per hour on a normal day.

Should I charge more for dog walks on holidays?

You can, and PSI says "Holiday surcharges, late booking fees, and cancellation fees are common in our industry." A 2021 Time To Pet guide gave a sample Christmas Day fee of $12.21 per visit; it is old and based on its own users, so treat it as a starting point. Tell clients your holiday fee when they book the holiday week. Then add it to each holiday walk's bill, with "Holiday" in the note on the bill.

How do I tell a dog walking client I'm raising my rates?

Give a date, the new price and one reason, in writing, a few weeks ahead. For example: "From March 1, my 30 minute walk will be $27. Thanks for trusting me with Max." Then send the first bill at the new rate on that date.

What this looks like

A client keeps paying the old rate.

Reply once, kindly, with the difference and the date the new price started. The bill already shows the new price, so she can see it in writing.

Does anybody make money walking dogs for a living?

Some pet care businesses do. PSI's 2026 survey reports average US gross revenue of $112,423 in 2025 for its member businesses, whose survey also covers dog walks. That is revenue before costs, from established pet-sitting businesses: 73% of PSI members have been in business 5 or more years. We found no figure for solo walkers in general.

Late and non-paying clients

How do I politely remind a client she owes me for walks?

Send one short text that names the walks still open and points to their bills. Keep it friendly and specific, and send it once, not every day.

Friendly nudge

A few days after the week's bills

Hi Jen, a quick reminder about Max's walks for May 4 to 8. Each walk has its own bill and link in my texts from Friday. You can pay in Venmo, Cash App, PayPal or Zelle. Thanks, Ana

Second nudge

About a week later

Hi Jen, Max's walks for May 4 to 8 are still open. The bills are in my texts from last Friday, one per walk. Could you take care of them before this Friday? Then next week's bills go out as usual. Ana

A client takes weeks to pay for walks. What do I do?

Shorten the gap: send each week's walk bills on Friday, one per walk, and ask for them to be paid before the next Friday. If she is more than a week or two behind, pause walks until it is settled, and say so in writing.

What this looks like
A regular weekday client pays some weeks and skips others.
What to do

Look at her client page, list the unpaid walks in one text, and ask her to clear them before next Monday.

What SnapPaid does

SnapPaid shows every bill for her and which are open. It counts days late from day 3, and you can send one nudge per 24 hours with one tap.

What it does not do

It does not chase her for you or charge her card. She pays in her own app.

Can I take a dog walking client to small claims court?

Yes, but rules and dollar limits differ by state, so check your state court's website first. Your bills, dates and texts are the record you would bring. For a few unpaid walks, a clear final text and a pause in service may be simpler. This is not legal advice.

Cancellations and missed walks

Can I charge a client who cancels a walk the same day?

Yes, if your cancellation policy says so and she agreed to it before the first walk. Without a written policy, a charge will feel like a surprise. PSI lists cancellation fees as common in pet care.

What this looks like
The client cancels after you are already driving over.
What to do

Charge what your policy says for a same-day cancel, or let it go once and point her to the policy.

What SnapPaid does

SnapPaid sends a bill for the late cancel, with "Late cancel, May 6" in the note on the bill.

What it does not do

It does not charge cancellation fees automatically or hold a card to charge.

What is a fair dog walking cancellation policy?

A fair one gives a clear cutoff, such as the evening before, and a set fee after it. Time To Pet's 2024 guide notes that taking payment in advance is "the easiest way to enforce your cancellation policy." Send it with your prices and ask the client to reply that she agrees.

Cancellation policy

With your prices, before the first walk

Hi Jen, here's how I handle changes. Cancel by 8 pm the night before and there's no charge. After that, the walk is billed at the full price, since I've held that time for Max. Ana

My client works from home now and keeps skipping walks. Can I charge a minimum?

You can set a minimum for clients who hold a regular slot, as long as you tell them first. For example, a skipped day in her slot is billed like a late cancel, as its own bill. Offer a choice: keep the slot with a minimum, or move to walks as needed with no held time.

What this looks like

A client quietly drops walks with no notice.

Ask her once which days she still needs. Then send a bill only for each walk you did, so she sees exactly what she is paying for.

How do cancellations work for recurring walks on Rover?

Rover's help center says recurring services always use its Same Day cancellation policy, and you cannot change it. You choose a policy only for one-off bookings. On Rover, the policy is Rover's to enforce, not yours.

Proof and disputes

How do I prove I walked the dog?

You can show you were there, but not every minute. A photo of the dog, stamped with the time and the place when location is on, records a moment, not the route or the length. For GPS-tracked walks, look at Wag or at Time To Pet (Solo and up), Precise Petcare, Pet Sitter Plus or Scout; SnapPaid has no GPS. SnapPaid is our app, so weigh this with that in mind.

What this looks like
A client asks whether the dog was walked at all.
What to do

Show her the photos with times from that week. In 2016 a Tampa couple caught a walker on camera skipping walks. They told owners to ask for "activity logs, daily photos," so expect the question.

What SnapPaid does

SnapPaid seals each photo or video at capture with the time, plus the place when location is on, and puts it on the bill.

What it does not do

It does not track the walk, the route or how long you were out.

The client says the walk was shorter than 30 minutes. What do I do?

Listen first, then share what you have. A photo at the start and a video at the end, each with its time, show when you began and finished. They do not show the walk in between, so be honest about that.

Should I send photos after every dog walk?

It is your call, and a photo on each bill shows the owner the day's walk. Keep the photos about the dog.

What this looks like

Your photos show the client's door, keys or lockbox.

Keep lockbox codes, keys, alarm panels and house numbers out of frame. Turn location off for shots inside her home. The pay link can be forwarded, and the photo goes with it.

What happens if a dog gets hurt on a walk with me?

Get the dog to a vet, then tell the owner right away. On Rover bookings, the Rover Guarantee covers pet injuries up to $25,000 per incident. Rover says it is not insurance, and it only covers bookings paid through Rover. For your own clients, you need your own insurance; Pet Care Insurance, for example, lists vet reimbursement of $1,000 per occurrence.

Rover, Wag and payment apps

How much does Rover take from dog walkers?

20% of each US booking, so you keep 80%. On a $25 walk, that is $5 to Rover and $20 to you. The owner also pays Rover an 11% booking fee on top. In California and in Rover's pilot cities the rules differ, as the table shows.

Does Rover's fee go down for repeat clients?

Only in Rover's pilot cities. There, the fee depends on your booking history with that client: 30% up to $599, 15% from $600 to $1,199, and 10% from $1,200. Rover says participation is automatic, with no opt-out and no end date given. Everywhere else in the US, it is 20%.

How much does Wag take from walkers?

We could not confirm it on Wag's own pages, so we do not quote a number. Wag's 2024 annual report lists "service fees charged to Pet Caregivers" as revenue but gives no percentage. Compare your payout per walk with your own rate before you count on Wag income. Wag finished a Chapter 11 reorganization in September 2025, kept operating and is now privately owned.

How long does it take to get paid on Rover after a walk?

Rover pays 2 days after you complete the service, through Stripe to your bank. Your bank may take up to 5 more business days. Tips owners add through Rover go to you in full.

A Rover client wants to pay me cash instead. How do I respond?

Decline, and keep the booking on Rover. Rover says finishing a Rover-arranged booking off Rover breaks its Terms of Service and can lead to deactivation. It adds that paying outside Rover can get both you and the owner suspended, and loses the Rover Guarantee and 24/7 support.

What this looks like
A Rover client offers to Venmo you directly to skip the fees.
What to do

Thank her and say you keep Rover bookings on Rover. Rover asks sitters to decline and use its Report option.

What SnapPaid does

SnapPaid is for clients you find yourself: neighbors, referrals, people who found you off the platforms.

What it does not do

It is not a way to bill Rover or Wag clients, and you should not use it for them.

Can I use Venmo for my dog walking business, or do I need a business profile?

You need a business profile. Venmo says personal accounts cannot accept payment for goods or services unless authorized, and a business profile is how you get authorized. It charges 1.9% + $0.10 per payment; on a $25 walk that is about $0.58. That fee is Venmo's, not SnapPaid's.

Should I accept cash or Zelle from dog walking clients?

Both can work: cash has no fee, and Zelle typically charges no fee. Zelle says it has no purchase protection and to send only to people you know and trust, which fits regular clients. Give cash clients a receipt, and use Mark as paid in SnapPaid. Zelle shows on the pay page as your email or phone, for her to copy into her bank app.

Tips, records and taxes

How much do people tip a dog walker at Christmas?

The Emily Post Institute suggests "Up to one week's pay or a gift" for a dog walker. We found no credible source for a standard per-walk tip, and Rover says a tip is never expected. SnapPaid's pay page has a tip option, so an owner who wants to tip can add it when she pays.

Do dog walkers have to pay taxes on Venmo and cash payments?

Yes: the IRS says gig income must be reported even without a Form 1099-K or 1099-NEC. Payment apps now send a 1099-K only above $20,000 and 200 transactions. If your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more, you file Schedule SE and pay 15.3% self-employment tax. This is not tax advice.

Are dog walker tips tax free now?

No, but they may qualify for a deduction: the IRS list of tipped occupations names "pet walker" under code 506. The IRS caps the deduction at $25,000, and for the self-employed at net income from the business. It phases out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint) and covers voluntary tips only. This is not tax advice; ask a tax pro.

Can I deduct mileage between walks?

Business driving can be deducted, and the IRS standard rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents per mile. Keep a log of dates, miles and which client each trip served. Ask a tax pro which trips count. SnapPaid does not track mileage or routes.

A client wants a receipt for her records. What do I send?

Send a receipt with the date, the dog's name and the amount. The IRS lists invoices and receipt books among the records that back up business income, so keep a copy too. SnapPaid makes a receipt with a PDF download and your review link for each paid bill. A week of walks means one receipt per walk. It has no year-end reports or exports.

Starting out

Do I need a license or permit to be a dog walker?

We found no single US dog walking license. Time To Pet notes that some states and cities require a business license, and some places need a permit. Massachusetts DCR parks require a $100 yearly permit for commercial walkers with up to 8 dogs. San Francisco has required a permit to walk four or more dogs since 2013, so check your city and county.

How much is dog walker insurance?

Pet Care Insurance lists plans from $17.92 a month or $194 a year, with $1,000,000 general liability per occurrence. Insureon reports a median of $42 a month for general liability among pet sitters who quoted through it. Some permits, such as Massachusetts DCR's, require $1M per occurrence. SnapPaid is not insurance or bonding.

I'm starting a small dog walking business and getting insured. What else should I set up?

Write three things down before your first client: your prices, including extra dogs and holidays; your cancellation policy; and when and how you get paid. Then pick the payment apps you accept and set up a Venmo business profile if you use Venmo. PSI advises putting payment terms, due dates and accepted methods in your contract.

Do I need dog walking software, or will a text invoice do?

Time To Pet, Precise Petcare, Pet Sitter Plus and Scout add scheduling, GPS and client portals. For one person they run $20 to $50 a month, plus card fees. SnapPaid only does the bill: a photo, a text and a link, for $9.99 a month after 3 free invoices, with no scheduling, GPS or autopay. SnapPaid is our app, so weigh this with that in mind.
