Getting paid as a handyman: pricing, materials, extra work and state limits
For solo handymen paid in Venmo, Cash App, PayPal or Zelle.
Get paid before you leave: the photo of the finished job becomes a bill she pays from one text link. SnapPaid takes 0%, but her payment app may charge you a fee. Agree extra work in writing before you do it; California requires a signed written change order. Know your state's dollar limit for unlicensed work, and never split a job to stay under it.
Pricing
Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?
Charge by the job when you know how long it takes, and by the hour when you don't. A flat price is easier for the customer to say yes to. An hourly rate protects you on jobs with surprises. SnapPaid takes either a flat price or an hourly rate on each bill.
What's a fair handyman hourly rate in 2026?
We found no current independent survey. HomeGuide listed $50 to $80 an hour for a self-employed handyman in August 2023. The BLS median of $23.84 an hour for maintenance workers is an employee wage, not what a handyman charges. Check what others in your area charge.
Do handymen charge a minimum or trip fee?
You can, and HomeGuide's 2023 guide lists both: a $75 to $200 minimum and a $30 to $80 trip charge. Tell the customer before you drive out, so it is not a surprise. HomeGuide
If she cancels at the door, point to the message where you named the trip charge. Send it as its own bill: "Trip charge, job cancelled on arrival."
How do I price a job when I don't know how long it will take?
Charge hourly and give a range up front: "Probably 2 to 3 hours at $65." Tell her when you pass the top of the range, before you keep going.
Text her at the 2-hour mark next time, before you go over. For this one, explain what took longer, in one line.
The bill shows the hourly rate and hours, the note on the bill and a photo of the finished work, stamped with the time.
SnapPaid has no time clock, so the hours on the bill are the ones you enter.
How do I charge for a bunch of small tasks on one visit?
Price the visit, not each task, or charge hourly for the whole list. Name the tasks in a few words in the note on the bill, such as "Faucet, 2 shelves, door latch," so she sees what she paid for. A repeat customer with a running list gets one bill per visit.
How do I raise my handyman rates on repeat customers?
Give a date, the new rate and one reason, in writing, before her next booking. Then use the new rate on the next bill.
Rate change
Before the next booking
Hi Karen, a heads-up: from January 1 my rate goes from $65 to $75 an hour. My costs went up this year. Thank you for the steady work. Mike
Materials and deposits
Should I mark up materials as a handyman, and by how much?
We found no credible, dated survey of handyman materials markup, so we will not give a percentage. A method: decide one markup, tell customers up front that materials are billed at cost plus that amount, and keep receipts.
How do I bill a customer for parts I bought at the store?
Add them to the job total and name them in the note on the bill: "Labor 2 hours, plus faucet and supply lines $84." SnapPaid has no line items or materials tracking, so the note carries the detail. Keep the store receipt in case she asks.
Should I ask for a deposit before buying materials?
For jobs with real material costs, yes, within your state's rules. SnapPaid has no deposit feature. Send a separate bill for the deposit before you shop, and a second bill for the rest when the job is done.
Next time, bill the materials before you buy them. For this job, nudge her with the bill link and the amount.
SnapPaid asks you "Did she pay?" on day 3, 7 and 14, and one tap sends a nudge, once every 24 hours.
It does not take deposits as a feature or remind customers on its own. A deposit is a separate bill you send.
How much deposit can a handyman legally take in California?
CSLB says a down payment on a home improvement contract "cannot be more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less." CSLB also says a written contract is required for home improvement projects over $500. This is not legal advice. CSLB on contracts
Customer wants to supply their own materials. Do I charge less?
You charge less in total, because there is no material cost or markup, but your labor rate stays the same. Say up front that you are not responsible for the quality of parts she supplies.
Scope creep and change orders
Customer keeps adding "while you're here" jobs. How do I charge for them?
Name the price before you start each one: "Sure, that's another $40." Then add it to the total and the note on the bill. If you are hourly, the extra time goes on the same bill.
Give the price, get her yes in writing, then do it.
Raise the total and add "plus toilet flapper replaced" to the note on the bill. One photo, one bill.
SnapPaid has no change orders, quotes or line items. The approval lives in your messages, not in SnapPaid.
Do I need a change order for a small handyman job?
In California, CSLB says changes to price or scope on a home improvement contract "MUST be done with a written 'Change Order,' signed by the customer and contractor prior to the change." Other states differ, so check yours. Even where it is not required, a written change protects both sides. This is not legal advice.
Is a text message enough to approve extra work?
It is better than nothing, but construction lawyers advise against it. In a 2021 Levelset roundup, lawyers warned that texts get lost, deleted and print without dates. In California, a change order must be written and signed by both sides. This is not legal advice. Levelset attorney blog
Job turned out bigger than quoted. How do I bill it?
Stop, show her, and agree the new price in writing before you go on. Then bill the agreed total. Do not finish and surprise her with a bigger bill.
Stop work. Show her the rot, give a new price, and get it in writing, signed where your state requires.
Once agreed, the bill carries the new total, a few words about the extra work in the note on the bill and a photo of the finished job.
SnapPaid does not write or sign change orders. Its bill photo is of the finished job, not the rot you found.
How do I put the extra work on the same invoice?
Raise the total and name the extra work in the note on the bill. SnapPaid has no line items. If you would rather keep it apart, send the extra work as its own bill.
Getting paid: apps and fees
Should I get paid before I leave or send an invoice later?
Before you leave, while the finished job is in front of her. Snap the work, send the bill, and she can pay from the text before you load the truck. Later bills get forgotten.
An older customer doesn't use apps, and her daughter pays from another state.
Send the bill to whoever pays. The daughter sees the photo of the finished job in the text and pays from her own app.
Can I take Venmo for handyman work, or do I need a business profile?
Use a business profile. Venmo's user agreement says personal accounts may not be used for business. Its help page says only accounts authorized for purchases may accept payment for services. A business profile charges 1.9% + $0.10 per payment; a personal payment marked goods and services costs 2.99%. Venmo help
What does Cash App or PayPal charge on business payments?
PayPal charges 2.99% to receive money for goods and services, and 3.49% + $0.49 on checkout and invoicing. Since July 2022, US business accounts cannot receive friends and family payments from US senders. We could not confirm Cash App for Business's fee, so check Cash App's fee page.
Is Zelle safe for getting paid by customers?
Zelle typically charges no fee, and it tells users to send money only to people they know and trust. Small business terms depend on your bank. Zelle has no pay link, so SnapPaid's pay page shows your Zelle email or phone for her to copy. Zelle help center
If a property manager pays by Zelle and wants a receipt for the owner, mark the bill paid once the money lands. The receipt downloads as a PDF.
Do I need to take credit cards as a handyman?
Not to get paid, but some customers want them, and card processing costs a fee each time. Jobber lists 2.9% + 30 cents per card, and Square's free invoice plan 3.3% + 30 cents. Jobber pricing, Square pricing SnapPaid does not process cards; she pays in Venmo, Cash App, PayPal or Zelle. SnapPaid is our app, so weigh this with that in mind.
How do I send a professional invoice from my phone?
Snap the finished job in SnapPaid, set the price, and send. The bill carries your logo and business name, the photo and a short note, and goes by text from your own number. SnapPaid is our app, so weigh this with that in mind.
Late and short-paying customers
Customer said "I'll pay you Friday" and hasn't paid. What do I say?
Text her the amount, the job and the link, and ask for a day. Keep it short and polite. SnapPaid asks you "Did she pay?" on day 3, 7 and 14; it never reminds her on its own, so you send the nudge.
Late bill nudge
Day 3 or later
Hi Karen, a quick reminder about the $240 for the shelves and TV mount on the 12th. The bill with a photo of the finished wall is here: [link]. Could you let me know when to expect it? Thanks, Mike
Ask for the date and the name she sent it to, then check your Cash App history. Mark it paid only when you see it.
If she tapped "I've paid" on the pay page, SnapPaid alerted you, so you know which bill she means.
SnapPaid never touches the money, so it cannot see a payment inside Cash App.
Customer paid less than the invoice and says the job "wasn't worth it."
Ask what exactly she is unhappy with, in writing. If it is a fixable flaw, offer to fix it and keep the full price. If she won't pay the balance, the steps below apply.
Offer to redo the caulk line, then ask for the $50. Decide which matters more to you, the $50 or the customer.
Send the balance as its own bill, with "balance on caulking job" in the note on the bill. The original bill photo shows the work as you left it.
A photo cannot settle whether a line is straight enough. It is a record of how it looked.
Can I sue in small claims without a written contract?
Often yes. Nolo says not having a written contract "is not a bar to the lawsuit or the mechanic's lien, with the right evidence in hand." Its steps: talk, send a demand letter, then lien or small claims. In California, CSLB says customers do not have to pay an unlicensed person and cannot be sued for nonpayment. This is not legal advice. Nolo, CSLB
Can I put a lien on a house for a small handyman job?
Nolo lists a mechanic's lien as one step, even without a written contract. Lien rules vary by state, and licensing matters: in California an unlicensed worker cannot sue to collect. Check your state's rules or ask a lawyer. This is not legal advice.
Damage disputes and proof of work
Customer says I damaged the floor. How do I prove it was already there?
Only a photo taken before you started can show that. SnapPaid's bill photo is of the finished job, so take your own "before" photos of the area too. A photo is not insurance.
Send the bill photo and any "before" photos you took. Ask when she first saw the scratch.
The bill photo is sealed at capture with the time, and the place when location is on.
It does not prove the scratch was there before you came, and it does not protect you from a damage claim.
Should I take before and after photos on every handyman job?
Yes, it costs a few seconds. The "after" can be your SnapPaid bill photo. The "before" is your own phone photo, since SnapPaid bills only the finished job.
Customer says the job wasn't finished. How do I show it was?
Send the bill photo of the finished work, with its time stamp. It shows how the work looked when you left. If she names something specific, offer to look at it.
A landlord ordered repairs at a rental, the tenant let you in, and the landlord wants proof before paying.
Send the bill to the landlord. She sees the finished repair in the photo, with the time, and the place when location is on.
Licensing and dollar limits
What can a handyman legally do without a license in California?
CSLB says an unlicensed person may do projects up to $1,000, all costs included, if no workers are hired and no building permit is needed. Ads must say the person is not licensed. Penalties for a first offense can include up to six months in jail, a $5,000 fine, or both. This is not legal advice.
In California, you are asked to replace a bathroom fan and patch drywall for $1,400.
That is over the $1,000 limit, labor and materials together. Without a license, you would have to turn it down or have a licensed contractor take it.
What's the dollar limit for handyman work in Arizona, Florida or Nevada?
Arizona and Nevada are under $1,000, Florida under $2,500, each counting labor and materials. Each has conditions, such as no building permit. Check your state's board before you bid. This is not legal advice.
| State | Limit, labor and materials together | Main conditions | Splitting a job to stay under |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | Up to $1,000, all costs included (since Jan 1, 2025) | No hired workers; no building permit; ads must say not licensed | Not allowed |
| Arizona | Less than $1,000 | Casual or minor work; no local building permit; ads must say "not a licensed contractor" | Not allowed (A.R.S. 32-1121) |
| Nevada | Less than $1,000 | Repair or maintenance work; no building permit | Not allowed |
| Florida | Less than $2,500 | Not part of a larger job; no advertising as a contractor | Not allowed (F.S. 489.103) |
Can I split a job into two invoices to stay under the limit?
No. All four states above bar splitting a job to avoid licensing. Arizona's and Florida's statutes say so in plain words. Bill the job as one job.
Records and taxes
Do I need to report Venmo payments from handyman jobs on my taxes?
Yes. The IRS says that whether or not you get a Form 1099-K, you must report all income. Payment apps send a 1099-K only when payments exceed $20,000 in more than 200 transactions. Self-employment tax is 15.3% on net earnings of $400 or more. This is not tax advice. IRS on 1099-K
Will a landlord or property manager send me a 1099?
A business that pays you may have to send a Form 1099-NEC. The threshold is $2,000 for payments made in 2026, up from $600 before 2026. A payer "not engaged in a trade or business" does not have to. This is not tax advice. IRS on Form 1099
What records should a handyman keep for the IRS?
The IRS lists invoices, receipt books and deposit information as supporting documents for income, and says a combination may be needed. Keep material receipts too. SnapPaid gives a receipt with a PDF for each paid bill, but no reports or exports, so save the PDFs. This is not tax advice. IRS records
